Jonesboro Wildlife Education: What Diseases Do Rodents Carry?

Most people have had the unpleasant experience of having encountered one or more rodents in their home at one time or another. But not only are they annoying and somewhat destructive, they also carry a number of diseases. Rats and mice can carry up to 35 diseases. These diseases are transmitted to humans by improper handling (especially of dead rats), saliva, urine, feces, bites and scratches, and indirectly through fleas, mites, or ticks that have been on infected rodents. Let’s look at some of these diseases.

Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis
Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCMV) is an infectious viral disease that is transmitted through the urine and saliva or rats. Some people suffer long-term effects of LCMV, while others have only temporary discomfort. Some of the symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting. Women who are pregnant when they contract LCMV will likely give birth to a baby with severe birth defects.

Rat-bite Fever
Rat-bite Fever is contracted by being bitten or scratched by an infected rat. It can also be transmitted through the handling of a dead rat.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
This disease is transmitted primarily by the cotton or rice rat, deer mouse, and white-footed mouse. It is contracted and spread by touching rat urine or feces or inhaling the dust that has been contaminated by rat droppings or urine. Hantavirus symptoms are flu-like and progress to difficulty breathing and eventual death, if left untreated.

Bubonic Plague
Once the terror of Europe, Bubonic or Black Plague happens when people are bitten by fleas that have been on infected rats. During the Middle Ages, bubonic plague was responsible for the death of millions of people. The plague can also be carried by wood rats, ground squirrels, rock squirrels, fox squirrels, chipmunks, and prairie dogs.

Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is contracted when a person is in contaminated water, wading, swimming, or kayaking, or by drinking contaminated water. Leptospirosis can cause heart problems and liver and renal failure.

Salmonellosis
Salmonellosis is transmitted to humans when they eat contaminated food or drink contaminated water. The water gets contaminated by rat droppings.

Colorado Tick Fever
This disease is caused when a person is bitten by a tick that has been feasting on a diseased wood rat.

Tularemia
This is a bacterial disease that is transmitted from rodents to humans primarily through handling of infected rodents, eating or drinking anything contaminated by the bacteria. It can also be contracted by inhaling dust particles from feces or urine.

Allergies
Rodents are also a source of allergens. The dander, droppings, and shed hair can give a person with allergies something to sneeze about.
